EBONY SET – 18K YELLOW GOLD AND BLACK ONYX  NECKLACE, RING, EARRINGS STUDS AND EARRINGS SET

Because of its shine and elegance, the BLACK ONYX gemstone has always been used as a joker in jewelry making. Its name comes from Greek mythology and means “fingernails,” based on the legend that Cupid cut the fingernails of Venus while she was sleeping on the banks of the INDUS river. When the fairies learned that, they turned the fingernails into stones, to prevent them from dying drowned after falling into the water. Apart from this legend, the Romans wore this gemstone around their neck in battles to increase their courage, like the famous Roman general Publius Cornelius Scipio. In the Victorian Era, BLACK ONYX became immensely popular among the nobles, because Queen Victoria only wore black ornaments after the death of her beloved husband. In the 1920’s, BLACK ONYX became the gemstone of choice and the most fashionable one in jewelry making.

For this set the artist used BLACK ONYX in 12-mm faceted balls – 20 balls in the necklace and 2 balls in the earrings – linked by a twisted 18K yellow gold wire, thus establishing a very beautiful and unusual contrast between the black ONYX and the YELLOW GOLD faceted balls.
